The first settlement was founded in the 2-nd century by the ancient Thracians and was called Larisa. Only in the XIV century it was renamed to St. Vlas, in honor of the patron of traders, breeders and healers.

In the vicinity of the village there were 4 other monasteries. The town of Sveti Vlas is one of the oldest settlements in the municipality of Nessebar. During the Ottoman rule several names of the village are known, and all of them are connected with monasteries.

In 2006, according to the decision of the Council of Ministers, the village of St. Vlas acquired the status of a city.

In 2007 St. Vlas opened the largest yacht port in Bulgaria with capacity of 300 yachts.
